Samsung has been showing interest in Magneti Marelli, a subsidiary of Fiat-Chrysler that develops automotive systems. In particular, MM makes things like in-car entertainment systems, lighting, and telematics. What does this mean for you? Samsung may start making some of the parts for Fiat-Chrysler models, something many drivers can’t wait to see.
According to Bloomberg, Samsung has been talking about this deal since 2014. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Samsung, it is the world’s largest producer of memory chips and televisions. An FCA partnership with Samsung would suggest the latter would develop all-new infotainment systems, driver-assist technologies, and even self-driving cars, bringing better tech to FCA vehicles.
The Samsung Chrysler partnership is not uncommon. In fact, Geroge Galliers, an analyst at Everscore ISI, said: “It makes sense for a manufacturer to separate and crystallize value from their components business. Ford and GM separated their businesses several years ago.”
None of this is set in stone yet. However, Samsung is definitely taking a long, hard look at the possibility. Like many other carmakers, this could mean a completely reinvented telematics system, offering better connectivity, safer vehicles, and more breakthrough technologies. We can’t wait to see what Samsung may develop for Fiat-Chrysler models. These vehicles may even be able to drive themselves in the near future.
