You don’t have to go far to see something spectacular. In fact, right here in our own backyard, we have some great places to visit. Here are a few fantastic road trips in Illinois that involve not only your car, but your bicycle and even a boat.
- Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail. Head east to LaSalle and take a trip on the canal route that connects Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River by way of the Illinois River. You’ll see some dynamic landscape with rolling hills and towering bluffs.
- Grand Illinois Trail. Here in Peru, Illinois, we have the benefit of being not far from the Grand Illinois Trail route. While this road trip won’t really involve your car, head out on your bicycle to explore the more than 500-mile continuous loop that follows the Illinois River to the Mississippi River, then across the northern border of Illinois and back down along Lake Michigan.
- Historic Lincoln Highway. This highway is one of Illinois’ National Scenic Byways. It stretches from the Indiana border all the way to the Mississippi and includes U.S. 30 and Illinois Routes 31 and 38. There is something for the whole family along the route, including historic locations, beautiful landscapes, cultural stops, and more.
